Montreal Rowing Club to Host 2012 Canadian Masters Championships
Rowing Canada Aviron (RCA) is pleased to announce that the annual Canadian Masters Championships regatta will be held at the Olympic Basin, in Montreal, Quebec, August 24 to 26, 2012
The regatta is hosted by the Montreal Rowing Club, which celebrates its 25th anniversary in 2012. Club president Pierre-Rémi Fourès is the chair of the regatta Organizing Committee.
"Rowing Canada Aviron is very pleased to partner with the Montreal Rowing Club to host the 2012 Canadian Masters Championships," said Rowing Canada Aviron president Dr. Michael Murphy. "Masters regattas are not only competitive and exciting, but also a lot of fun for all involved. We are looking forward to a great event."
The regatta draws hundreds of masters rowers each year. The competitor categories are in five-year groups from age 21 to 26, the AA category, to 75 years of age and older, the I category. Masters race in the following boat types: single, double, quadruple sculls; pair, four, coxed four and eight sweep boats. There are events for women and men and mixed boats as well as lightweight and open weight classes. Race distance is 1000 metres.
The host club was chosen from bids received and independently reviewed by the RCA Masters Committee and the RCA Safety and Events Committee. Both committees recommended to the V.P. National Development that Montreal Rowing Club be the host for 2012. The RCA Executive Committee recommended the same bid to the RCA Board.

Rowing Canada Aviron is resuming its webinar series – here are links to two upcoming sessions.
Why a Skills Event? Wednesday, June 22 at 5pm PDT (8pm Eastern)
As part of Rowing Canada Aviron’s LTAD Overview (2005) and Competition Review (2007), it was recommended that in the early stage, Learning to Train (Learn to Row) more emphasis should be placed on rowing technique and skills. A Skills Event has been created and is being offered this year in a few clubs and provinces. This webinar, led by Martin George, Rowing BC Adaptive Coach and former RCA Domestic Development Officer, will discuss the skills and skill challenges that are part of the event. Martin will also discuss why this is important for the beginner rower whether they are on the excellence pathway, or wishing to enjoy rowing for fun, recreation and fitness.

How To Run a Skills Event : Wednesday, June 29 at 5pm PDT (8pm Eastern)
The creation of a Skills Event is one of the recommendations in RCA's LTAD Competition Review. Rowing Canada Aviron has developed a series of "skill challenges" as part of the Skills Event that reinforce important abilities needed to be an effective rower including balance, boat maneuvers, steering and stopping. The skill challenges emphasize boat handling, safety and rowing technique. Building on the previous webinar, Martin George and Eron Main share some of their experiences in running a skills event and provide advice on how to organize this. Based on their experiences, Martin and Eron provide valuable advice on hosting a skills event at the BC Summer Games.
