SENIOR MALE ATHLETE OF THE YEAR - Johnny McLeod
Nominated by: Saskatoon Rowing Club Johnny has been an integral member of the men’s provincial team since making the 2019 Western Canada Summer Games squad. At the 2021 RCA National Rowing Championships, Johnny, in his first race for Saskatchewan as a Senior, placed 4th in the Lightweight Men’s U23 and Open 1x. In 2019, he, along with teammates, won gold in the Men’s 2- and 4- and later that year, at the 2019 RCA National Rowing Championships, won silver with his partner in the U19 Men’s 2-. Beyond his on-water performances Johnny is also an outstanding leader. Especially during COVID-19 restrictions, Johnny was someone who was able to gather in his teammates and encourage and drive them towards success. Additionally, in 2021, Johnny assisted with an at-risk rowing program for students from a behavioural classroom in Saskatoon. FEMALE MASTER ATHLETE OF THE YEAR - Dee Marshall
Nominated by: Saskatoon Rowing Club Joining the Saskatoon Rowing Club in November 2020, Dee quickly rose to be one of the fastest Masters athletes on the erg at the club! At the 2022 Canadian Indoor Rowing Championships, she won bronze in her age category, also qualifying her for the 2022 World Indoor Rowing Championships where she placed 8th and achieved a personal best in her 2km. As a club member, Dee is dedicated to learning how to train and row, attending 5-6 practices per week. She is welcoming to all new members and incredibly humble about her ability. Off the erg and water, Dee also assisted the SRC in being the Safe Sport Lead for the club, ensuring that the safety of all participants was being respected. MALE MASTER ATHLETE OF THE YEAR - Scott Glass Nominated by: Kate Morstad In his first year of rowing, Scott has made incredible progress. Starting as a Learn-to-Row participant, Scott quickly transitioned to the competitive Master’s program at the Regina Rowing Club. Scott was able to race for his first time in September at the Head of the Saskatchewan regatta where he was the sole male para athlete competing. He is always up for a challenge and the first to cheer others on. His commitment to self-improvement is inspiring for all members of the club. Scott is an incredible ambassador for para sport and has made the Regina Rowing Club richer for it. |

JUNIOR MALE CREW OF THE YEAR -
Grayson Laycock & Max Pally Nominated by: Saskatoon Rowing Club Both Max and Grayson exemplify the product of what hard work can accomplish. Beginning their rowing careers in 2018 at the Saskatoon Rowing Club, Max and Grayson made the provincial team in 2019 for their first time, competing for Saskatchewan at the 2019 Western Canada Summer Games, ultimately winning silver and bronze in the Men’s 8+ and 2x respectively. During COVID-19, Max and Grayson both committed to improving their ability in small boats, setting them up for success in their return racing in the 2021 season. Their crew won gold at the 2022 RCA National Rowing Championships, the first for any Saskatchewan crew, in the U19 Men’s 2-. During their training, Grayson also found time to coach Learn-to-Row programs at the club, while Max has been an outstanding role model for younger athletes at the club who look up to him and his success. JUNIOR FEMALE ATHLETE OF THE YEAR - Ellen Marion Nominated by: Kate Morstad Having almost no race experience to her name, Ellen led the way for Saskatchewan junior women at the 2022 RCA National Rowing Championships, placing 11th in the U19 Women’s 1x. Ellen is an athlete who exemplifies the hard work and perseverance it takes to be a high performance athlete. She knows how to dig deep and is always looking to push personal limits. Ellen is a leader in the Regina Rowing Club junior program, quick to assist anyone who needs it and alway encouraging her teammates. |
VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR - Michelle Lopez
Nominated by: Kevin & Lana Lane with support from Raff & Zuhy Sayeed Michelle has set the stage for a growing rowing club by encouraging others to try the sport, hosting rowing ‘let’s try it camps’, and training a core of young athletes in the dryland season. Michelle has been the voice for Lloyminster athletes as she advocates within the community for further visibility of the sport of rowing. She has worked with limited resources to improve the Lloydminster Rowing Club and has achieved much success. Michelle has been an integral piece to the success of the revitalization of the Lloydminster Rowing Club. COACH OF THE YEAR - Elana Gelineau Nominated by: Saskatoon Rowing Club It can be said, without much doubt, that Elana has been a major contributing factor to the Saskatoon Rowing Club’s success and subsequent recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic. Elana established an approach in her coaching that focused on creating meaningful and safe opportunities for the people of Saskatoon to participate in rowing on the South Saskatchewan River. As an on-water coach, Elana developed an engaging Junior Development program that fostered strong boat manoeuvring skills and a love for racing. Elana is reflective and curious in her practice as a coach, often seeking out the most current information in regard to training, rigging, and the art of coaching. |
